Our next meeting – and the link to join it on Zoom
Our next meeting takes place at the Society of Antiquaries of London (SAL) on Monday, 26 June, at 6.15pm BST.
This time we move our attention to matters within recent memory, and the success of the gold sovereign, not just as a bullion coin but, in its various specimen and proof forms, as a collector's item.
Our speaker, Chris Barker, who is Information and Research Manager at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, will be completing a trilogy of papers to the Society with his address entitled The post-War sovereign, Part III: towards a modern bullion business – diversification and expansion.
Mr Barker read History at the University of York, where he also completed an MA in Cultural Heritage Management in 2011. In 2012 he began working as Assistant Curator at the Royal Mint Museum and he regularly gives talks and has spoken on topics as varied as the Royal Mint during the First World War through to the introduction of the £1 coin.
The SAL is located at Burlington House, on the north side of Piccadilly, opposite the Fortnum & Mason department store. Proceed through the archway leading to the House and the SAL is on the ground floor of the west wing of the building, at the far end of the courtyard, entered through a pair of brown doors.
The nearest Underground stations are Piccadilly Circus and Green Park, both 5 minutes' walk away. Those attending meetings in person will be required to sign the SAL's Visitors' Book.
If you are in London that day we look forward to your company, otherwise please join us on Zoom. To join the meeting online, please use the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/
With the success of the anti-counterfeiting campaigns of the 1950s and 1960s, and with soaring sales, the sovereign proved to be hugely successful in international markets. But threats loomed on the horizon for the famous gold coin as other countries sought to enter the bullion market with their own gold pieces. As the winds of change blew through the market, could the sovereign fight off the competition and continue to thrive? The return of proof sovereigns and the development of another icon, the gold Britannia, all owe their origins to Britain’s fight to maintain its market share in an increasingly competitive international market.

Library developments – and closures
With the complete refurbishment of the Warburg Institute now well under way, the next phase of the work will require the temporary closure of the Society's joint Library while the building's basement is reconfigured.
From 15 July the Library will be closed, to enable shelved material to be moved to a temporary location on the fourth floor of the building. Once this move is complete, hopefully by sometime in September, the Library will once again be accessible, but for six days a week rather than one half-day.
Next April/May, the Library will once again be closed and unavailable for study for about a month while shelved material is moved to its new permanent home, back in the basement but in a different area to its current location.
The open shelving arrangement, beginning in the autumn, means that the books, which have now all been security-tagged, will be accessible to all University of London students, as well as members of both societies.
More news on all of this as the building work progresses.
Coin conference at the Bank of England – call for papers!
Calling all collectors and detectorists, students and teachers, enthusiasts and researchers, and all those curious about coins and banknotes! You are warmly invited to the Bank of England on 15 September for a remarkable day of talks and discussions, all connected to numismatics!
To create a day full of new ideas and information, the organisers want to hear from a range of speakers who are excited about the stories that money can tell. It is anticipated that the day will include a range of different talks of different lengths, anything from 5 to 20 minutes, with time for discussion. There will also be discussion-based sessions as well.
An excellent programme needs excellent participants, so please use this link to indicate what topic you’d like to talk about and for how long:

The day is being organised by the inclusive numismatics group, who want to create a space where women, people of colour, those from the LGBTQ+ community and anyone who has not yet found the right forum for their passion to feel included. To enable this the event is free, catering is provided and a number of bursaries for travel costs are available. The deadline for applications is 15 July.
