Minutes of the Meeting of the British Numismatic Society, held online via Zoom on Tuesday, 26 January 2021, Dr Clancy, President, being in the chair and 89 other people present.
Further details of the talk:
This paper will compare the siege coinage of the British Civil Wars and the Eighty Years War in the Netherlands, the war of independence fought by the Dutch United Provinces against the Spanish Empire. The sixteenth and seventeenth-century wars in the Low Countries were hugely influential in Britain, thanks to the Dutch diaspora in England and the presence of large numbers of English and Scottish soldiers fighting in the name of international Protestantism in the Low Countries. The paper will argue that these experiences were the main method by which good military practice was introduced to the British Isles in the years before the Civil Wars, including the use of obsidional coinage.
The Society's Director, William MacKay, has been busy planning the format and content of this year's joint meeting between the Royal NS and British NS, to be held at the Headley Lecture Theatre within the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, on Saturday 10 July.
The second in this year's Money and Medals online training programmes, hosted by South West Heritage Trust and the Somerset Museums Service, will be held over Zoom on 26 February, commencing at 10am and concluding by 2pm. The programme focuses on the identification of military medals, the documentation of medals on a museum database, and advice on the storage and display of medals. Whether you are new to this subject or have attended one of their events on medals before, all are welcome.
