Eldest son of Edward the Elder, and grandson of Alfred the Great. He completed the re-conquest of territories controlled by the Danes with the capture of York in 927. With the sobriquet "the Glorious" he consolidated power in the former heptarchy, and can probably be considered the first king of England. Click here for the Wikipedia article on Athelstan.
