Huxtable’s Eagles. 55-45 BC. Gold quarter stater. 12mm. 1.36g. Cruciform spiral with the heads of two maned eagles and two winged horses, pellet in centre./ Horse left with ring-pole on neck, double-stranded tail with two pellets between, solar flower above, ‘anemone’ below. ABC 782, VA 256, BMC 542-543, DK 270, S 48. CCI 20.0247 (this coin). Ex John Follows collection. Found Emsworth, Hampshire, December 2014. Rare - only 13 others recorded, including three in museums.
Named after “the late Mr Huxtable” whose excellent example was acquired by Sir John Evans (The coins of the Ancient Britons, 1864, p.91).
