Eadwald - Eadnoth - A coin of a previously unknown type in the coinage of Eadwald of East Anglia (796-c. 798/800), by the East Anglian moneyer Eadnoth. The obverse inscription, +EA[ ]VALDREX (V inverted, runic L) is similar to that of other coins of Eadwald, and the reverse inscription (EADNOD, N reversed) is the same as other coins of Eadnoth (Naismith types E2.1 and E2.2, North 432), but there is no close match for the designs on either side of the coin. A metal detecting find by Gareth Holloway, who kindly supplied the images. |
