East Anglia, Aethelberht II ( 760-794), light coinage, ?before 792, Penny, 1.30g, without portrait, ?Ipswich, Lul, cross of four cruciform lobes, extending from a central pellet, a trefoil in each angle all within inner pelleted circle, +EðILBERHT RE, Latin cross, trefoils within legend, rev. + /L V L within angles of a large cross fourchee over lozenge within which an inner circle containing a lobed cross extending from central pellet, trefoils in legends (Chick -; N.-; S.-), full flan, almost extremely fine, a new type for this king, the only example known and the only example for this king outside a Museum collection, extremely rare and highly important. Provenance: DNW auction, 11-12 June 2014, 309. Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2014.0071. Found in the Pevensey area, East Sussex, 2014. This is only the fourth known coin in the name of Aethelberht II, king of east Anglia, the only coin of his outside a museum, and the only known example without his portrait. The weight indicates this coin aligns with the light coinage issues of Offa which ceases c.792. This suggests that this coin was struck sometime before 792 when Aethelberht II asserted his right to strike coins in his own name. This coin was added to the Standard Catalogue 2015 edition as 746A.
