Our fourth meeting of the year takes place at the Society of Antiquaries of London on Monday, 27 March, at 6.15pm BST.
Our speaker is Rory Naismith, recently appointed Professor of Early Medieval English History in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Prof. Naismith, whose prolific published work has helped to considerably advance the study of Anglo-Saxon coins in recent years, will be moving into the second half of the 11th century when he addresses his audience on the intriguing subject of Domesday Book and the moneyers of 11th century England.
The SAL is located at Burlington House, on the north side of Piccadilly, opposite the Fortnum & Mason department store. Proceed through the archway leading to the House and the SAL is on the ground floor of the west wing of the building, at the far end of the courtyard, entered through a pair of brown doors.
The nearest Underground stations are Piccadilly Circus and Green Park, both 5 minutes' walk away. Those attending meetings in person will be required to sign the SAL's Visitors' Book.
If you are in London that day we look forward to your company, otherwise please join us on Zoom. To join the meeting online, please use the link and passcode as emailed to members.. Pre-registration is no longer necessary. If you are using the desktop version of Zoom, please ensure that you are using the most up-to-date version before joining us. The meeting itself will commence with formal business at 6.15pm and the lecture will begin immediately after that. Please be aware that if you are joining us from outside the UK, clocks will have advanced one hour to British Summer Time the day before the meeting.
All silver pennies minted in England from the early 970s to the 13th century carried the name of the individual responsible for manufacture, the moneyer, together with the location where they produced the coin. In the period down to 1100, this amounts to some 2,000 moneyers and over 120 mint-places. The role and status of these moneyers are matters of considerable importance for interpreting not only the coinage, but the economic and institutional structures of 11th century English society; yet precious few direct textual references to moneyers survive. This paper seeks to develop understanding of the moneyers as a group by seeing how many of them probably or possibly appear in Domesday Book, a major survey of landholding society in England as of 1066 and 1086. The results shed important light on the wealth and social connections of moneyers.

From time to time, and if the speaker has given permission, the Society makes available recordings from our monthly meetings. A list of those lectures available for viewing can be found at www.britnumsoc.org, navigate to Meetings, then Lecture Videos. Click the link provided to view the presentation. The video recording should successfully play on any computer that has a suitable video player installed e.g. VLC, which can be freely obtained here: https://www.videolan.
Thanks to the efforts of Lianna Spurrier of Numismatic Marketing, an important new addition to our canon of video lectures is the address given by John Kraljevich (pictured above) at the Society's meeting in New York in January. You can access it via the Newman Numismatic Portal, using the link: https://nnp.wustl.edu/
Of course, the NNP in St Louis is a repository of much more than videos, housing a vast digital database of numismatic literature, periodicals, auction catalogues, images and much more, all available freely online.
