Book your place at the Society's Summer Symposium – Oxford, 15 July 2023
The Society's Summer Symposium, themed under the heading Coin hoards – discovery and interpretation, is being staged on Saturday 15 July as a hybrid meeting in the Headley Lecture Theatre at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. For those interested in all aspects of coin hoards and hoarding, this is an event not to be missed.
For many centuries portable wealth in the form of coins was hidden and lost. Its rediscovery in later times has provided the raw data not only on coinage typology, chronology, production and circulation but also as a source of information able to contribute to archaeological, historical and economic research.
At this this all-day event, focused on the British Isles, leading figures working on coin hoards and related material will look at recent discoveries and what we can learn from them, along with the latest thinking on how coinage came to be hoarded and then hidden. It will then consider the latest techniques being used to recover and interpret hoards and to make available hoard data for researchers and collectors.
The Symposium will be a hybrid event, with the option of in-person or online attendance. To book a place, visit https://www.eventbrite.

"Follow the Money": Royal NS Parkes Weber Prize awarded to Annika Ester Maresia
Our sister Society have announced the award of their Parkes Weber Prize to Annika Ester Maresia (above), a D.Phil. candidate in English Language at Jesus College, Oxford. The Prize, instituted in 1954, is awarded for an original essay of not more than 5,000 words on any subject relating to coins, medals, medallions, tokens or paper money, and this is the 49th such award since its inception. To be eligible the essayist needs to be under the age of 30 at the time of submission.
Annika's winning essay "Follow the Money: The evidence of Offa’s coinage in tracing Kentish runic literacy" tackles a little-understood subject and it is to be hoped that it can be published in the near future, for the benefit of all those studying early Anglo-Saxon numismatics.
