No Moneyer, London - A continental imitation of a Henry III long cross penny, class 5. Obverse: Most of the inscription is obscured, except for ...NRIC... and an X before the sceptre and a further X to the left of the sceptre. Oval eyes. Reverse : voided long cross with lettering of Edwardian type: CIVI/TAS/LON/DON - which first appeared with te 1279 issue of Edward I. This coin probably dates to c. 1280. Coin purchased by Jos Benders in Osnabrück, and is likely of Westphalian origin. Weight: 0.98 gm, diameter 17mm. Coin is a little clipped but not enough to explain the low weight; when new, and if a genuine English penny, it should have weighed c.1.42 gm. |
