MATILDA

The daughter of Henry, I she was designated as heir to the English throne by her father.   The widow of German Emperor Henry V (d.1125) and later married Geoffrey Count of Anjou.  She entered England in pursuit of her inheritance in 1139, and established an Angevin court at Bristol, controlling most of south-west England.  Her half-brother Robert, Earl of Gloucester, an illegitimate son of Henry I, provided her with strong support.   Her son Henry became king Henry II on the death of Stephen in 1154.
