Minutes of the London meeting in January
Minutes of the Meeting of the British Numismatic Society, held at The Society of Antiquaries of London on Monday, 23 January 2023, Dr Screen, President, being in the chair and 39 other people present [22 in person, 17 on Zoom].
The President took the opportunity to welcome members and guests to the first meeting at the Society’s new venue.
The minutes of the meetings held on 22 November 2022 and 13 January 2023 were approved.
NOMINATIONS: Peter John Preston-Morley (London, 1970) was nominated for Honorary Membership for the first time. Anthony Mark Corcoran (Cumbria), Zach Filis (USA), Paul Jakimaitis (Middlesex), John Koshy (Surrey), Henry Miles Parker (Canada), Anna E. Temke (North Yorkshire) and James A. Thompson (USA) were nominated for Ordinary Membership. Ryan Rubin Worrell (Pembrokeshire) was nominated for Student Membership.
RE-ELECTION: University Library, Uppsala (Sweden), a member from 1953 to 2021, was re-elected to Institutional Membership.
ELECTIONS: Roy Brandon Adcock (USA) and Anna Gumola (London) were elected to Ordinary Membership.
RESIGNATIONS: Nigel Birch (West Yorkshire, 2022), John Francis Chown (London, 1971), Robert T. Fox (USA, 2020), Edward Richard Johnson (Renfrewshire, 2015), Peter Augustus Knapton (Kent, 2017), Dr Helen Julia Paul (Hampshire, 2019), Giles Phillips (Cambridgeshire, 2020), Brian John Stone (Derbyshire, 2022) and the Guildhall Library (London, 1954) had resigned with immediate effect.
The Secretary said that printed programme cards would be available to all those attending meetings in person.
Jennifer Adam then read a paper entitled Slavery and the Bank: the Bank of England’s links with transatlantic slavery.
The President then announced the date of the next meeting and closed the meeting.
The Society's third meeting of the year, and the second at our new home, the Society of Antiquaries of London, takes place on Monday, 27 February, at 6.15pm GMT.
Our speaker is Anni Byard, an archaeologist specialising in metal ‘small’ finds, and the title of her talk is Coins and conquest: coin hoarding in Britain 200 BC - AD 96. Anni has an undergraduate degree in archaeology from the University of Liverpool and a master’s in landscape archaeology from the University of Oxford. She worked in commercial archaeology for several years before joining the Portable Antiquities Scheme as the Finds Liaison Officer for Oxfordshire and West Berkshire in 2008. Anni left the PAS in 2019 to undertake her PhD, and currently works part-time for Oxford Archaeology South as their small finds specialist.
The SAL is located at Burlington House, on the north side of Piccadilly, opposite the Fortnum & Mason department store. Proceed through the archway leading to the House and the SAL is on the ground floor of the west wing of the building, at the far end of the courtyard, entered through a pair of brown doors.
The nearest Underground stations are Piccadilly Circus and Green Park, both 5 minutes' walk away. Those attending meetings in person will be required to sign the SAL's Visitors' Book.

The meeting itself will commence with formal business at 6.15pm and the lecture will begin immediately after that.
Traditionally, Iron Age and Roman numismatics and archaeology have been the preserve of period specialists, with little cross over. Different theoretical views between Iron Age and Roman coin deposition highlight the disparities in approach to each period’s material culture and archaeology and offers an opportunity to address some prevailing questions surrounding coin use in Iron Age Britain, and the impact of Rome, through a mix of landscape (macro-scale) and contextual (micro-scale) analysis. How were coins hoarded in Britain during the late Iron Age? Did the Roman invasion of AD 43 and the introduction of the Roman monetary system have any impact on hoarding? This talk will introduce the speaker's PhD research and present some early results on the Iron Age to Roman transition in Britain from the perspective of coin hoards, an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project between the University of Leicester and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

The society would like to apologise for the delays that some members have experienced in the delivery of BNJ 92, which was despatched from Milton Keynes, England, on 7 December (UK addresses) and 8 December (rest of the World), using the services of Royal Mail.
Fortunately, the printer produced excess volumes and we have been able to supply replacements to those who had not received their copies by the beginning of February.
