Minutes of the November meeting
Minutes of the Anniversary Meeting of the British Numismatic Society, held at Swedenborg Hall on Tuesday, 23 November 2021, Dr Clancy, President, being in the chair and 40 other people present.
The President welcomed those present to the meeting, the Society’s first live event since February 2020.
The minutes of the ordinary meeting held on 26 October 2021 were read and approved.
NOMINATIONS: Mark Morris (London), Colin Peckham (Norfolk) and Darren Vidler (Kent) were nominated for Ordinary Membership.
ELECTIONS: David Berry (S. Yorkshire), Jonathan Michael Dagg (London), Duncan Grahame Eccles (W. Yorkshire), Dr Chloe Knox (Sussex), Murdo Kennedy Macleod (Outer Hebrides), Horia Mihailescu (Norfolk), Dickon Perryman (Devon), Alessandro Rohl (Dumfries & Galloway), Laurent Schmitt (France) and David Sucha (Czech Republic) were elected to Ordinary Membership. Thomas Jack Payne (W. Yorkshire) and Wendy Scott (Leicestershire) were elected to Student Membership.
RESIGNATIONS: Christopher Faulkner (Canada, 2014) and Owen Kearn (Somerset, 2017).
The Secretary declared that the following 9 members were amoved for non-payment of their subscriptions under By-Law IV.7: James Furner (Kent, 2002), Andrew Gillespie (Derbyshire, 2003), Timah Kashian (Ceredigion, 2017), Paul Knudsen (USA, 2016), Thomas Shea (USA, 2019), Thomas Spinks (S. Yorkshire, 2018), Ben Worthington (Suffolk, 2016), Edificio El Soto (Spain, 2002) and University of Virginia (USA, 1972).
With the approval of members present, Emily Freeman and Ian Jull were appointed scrutators and the ballot for retaining the subscription rates was declared open.
On behalf of the Treasurer, the President presented the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2020, and declared the Society’s finances to be in good health.
The President moved the motion "That the British Numismatic Society desires to record its sincere regret at the death of Dr Colin Stewart Sinclair Lyon, President of the Society from 1966 to 1970, and subsequently one of the Society’s Vice-Presidents; expresses its appreciation of his unrivalled services to the Society over a period of well over half a century; and conveys its deep sympathy to his family in their loss”. The motion was carried, subsequent to which tributes to Dr Lyon were read by the President, Hugh Pagan, the Secretary (on behalf of Dr Robin Eaglen), Dr Rory Naismith, the Secretary (on behalf of himself) and the Director.
The President delivered his review of the Society’s activities in 2021. The results of the ballots were announced. A total of 46 votes had been cast, all in favour of the annual subscription remaining unchanged at £32 (and the concessionary rates of £15 and £10 as appropriate).
The President delivered his presidential address, Change through time: a long view of coinage reform.
On completion and on behalf of the membership, Hugh Pagan thanked the President for all his endeavours on behalf of the Society, and drew attention to the losses by death over the past year of David Sealy and Michael Anderson, both of whom had been members for over 65 years.
The President then invited Dr Elina Screen to take the Chair as the Society’s new President.
The Director read out the Society’s programme for 2022. The new President then closed the meeting and invited members and their guests to stay for the Anniversary Reception, generously sponsored by Philip Mernick and the Secretary to mark their belated 50th anniversaries of membership.

As our new President has already advised through the medium of her Winter Newsletter, the Society has moved its principal meeting venue to the premises of the Royal Philatelic Society (RPS), located in the heart of the city of London. The change has been necessitated by the inability of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies to host hybrid meetings at the present time. However, we will continue to meet at Swedenborg Hall, Holborn, in May and November, when the Society will host its traditional Summer and Winter receptions, while the October meeting will be staged at the Travellers Club in Pall Mall.

The RPS is located at 15 Abchurch Lane, EC4N 7BW, three minutes' walk from the Underground stations at Bank, Cannon Street and Monument. The 120-seat capacity of the Society's meeting room, located on the second floor (accessed by lift and stairs), allows for ample social distancing and features a huge ceiling-mounted screen, lectern and full AV facilities. All future meetings staged at the RPS will take a hybrid format and online links will continue to be circulated via the medium of E-NEWS, as previously.
Adjacent to the entrance of the RPS is the members’ lounge on the ground floor, which members and guests are encouraged to use if arriving before the start of meetings and where refreshments can be obtained for a fee.

Canadians celebrate it. Indigenous people curse its memory. Americans forgot about it. And the British, having burned down the White House, are just amused by it! The War of 1812 represented an inflection point in the history of North America, a multi-front war that tested the promise and wisdom of the adolescent American experiment. Though little more than a draw militarily, the survival of the United States represented a substantial victory for the new nation. The United States government celebrated their fortune with more official medal types for this three-year conflict than any other war, including the American Revolution. This lecture will examine the American military and naval medals issued during the War of 1812, British-issued commemorative and campaign medals related to the war, and medals that fit into the often-overlooked Anglo-native conflict that underscored the entire episode. As has been customary in recent years, pandemic permitting, the Society's New Year begins with our meeting held next week in conjunction with the important annual New York International Numismatic Convention. This year the Convention moves six blocks north to its new home, the InterContinental New York Barclay, located at 111 East 48th Street, between Park and Lexington avenues and a short walk from Grand Central station. The meeting is being held on Saturday 15 January in the hotel's Morgan Suite, and starts at 4pm. |

With the coming of the New Year it's time to remind members that prompt payment of your subscription not only means you keep receiving E-NEWS, and your annual copy of the British Numismatic Journal, but you will also save our Treasurer, David Young, a lot of time and effort spent chasing up outstanding payments.
Fortunately, the Society is financially sound and thriving, with a membership of 630. Membership fees have remained unchanged since 2003, a situation which thankfully is not likely to change in the short term. About half of you pay by standing order, which is a Treasurer's delight: others are encouraged to pay online via the portal on the Society's website, britnumsoc.org and by navigating to Membership, then Renewals.
Whichever way you pay, we appreciate your support – and because we want to ensure that you receive your copy of BNJ safely, please don't forget to inform us if you change address.
